    About
The Incubate DIY Conference will take place on September 16, 2011 at Midi Theater Tilburg. The conference displays the development and ethics of Do-It-Yourself culture with lectures, interviews, film, panels and stands. Renowned speakers and artists within DIY culture, such as Michael Azerrad, Bill Drummond and Steve Ignorant will participate in the program. Through the Pay What You Want-principle, visitors can determine the value of the conference for themselves.

The DIY Conference is part of the extensive program of this years theme of Incubate Festival: We Are Incubate, a project around the artistic practice, curative strategies, Do-It-Yourself ethics and the new participative role of audiences in Independent Culture. The conference offers reflection on the comprehensive program of the festival and on the value of creation in society.

Our industrial society is changing to a networked society. The industrial society created an environment where goods and services were delivered to people, and a culture based on top-down decisions. The main goal was to define people’s wishes and needs and to deliver this to them. A symphony is being played for you, a exhibition curated for you. Art being done to people, instead of with them.

This movement is changing. Within the ethos of open source communities and from a DIY-perspective, people are used to cooperate. Everybody is constantly connected, without obvious hierarchy. Decisions are made bottom-up. Knowledge is created and shared within this cooperation.

Where does that leave DIY-ethics? And how do (cultural) organizations respond to this? Because a mixture of different value-judgements doesn’t automatically lead to a better value-proposition. How do artists, festivals, museums and other organizations respond to this and maybe even more important: what is the new, participative role of the audience within such processes? This project is about altered arts practices and about the changing perception on arts & culture within a changing society.

We want the event to be accessible for everyone. That’s why we choose to apply the Pay What You Want-pricing mechanism. This way, you have the control to determine the value of the conference and the discussion involved.
