“Where are the angry young men and women of today who are saying: ‘this is all fucking wrong’, you know? What happened to that voice? It’s all sort of gone.”

At the Incubate DIY Conference on September 16, 2011, punk legend Steve Ignorant will be interviewed by writer and BBC commentator John Robb. With Crass, Ignorant was one of the driving forces of the DIY movement, and therefore a major influence in the punk scene. At the conference, they’ll discuss DIY, Crass’/Steve’s ethics and Steve’s autobiography The Rest is Propaganda.

There is No Authority But Yourself is a Dutch film directed by Alexander Oey documenting the history of the anarchist punk band Crass. The film features archive footage of the band and interviews with former members Steve Ignorant, Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher. As well as reflecting on the band’s past the film focuses on their current activities.

The film addresses the origins and aesthetic of Crass, and the DIY aspects of the band. About how the backgrounds of the musicians differed from each other, the artworks, the message, the way of living that surrounded the band and how it all come together. We also hear Steve Ignorant talking about how Joe Strummer turned him into forming his own band.
